Media Center

Welcome

The Jefferson Elementary library is a great place to find a book or adventure that fits your interests perfectly! During our weekly visits we learn about the library, check out great books to read, Web tools for learning, how to access and use information, research, and so much more! We learn how to access information on the internet safely, and use our Media Center website to extend what we are learning in our classrooms and in the Media Center. We also reach out to others to spread the joy of reading through our many service learning projects that make a difference!

Stop by today to start your next adventure!

Meet the Media Specialist

Mrs. Jessica Smoak

Mrs. Jessica Smoak

Welcome to the Jefferson Elementary Media Center!

My name is Jessica Smoak.  I was born and raised in North Carolina, but moved to South Carolina in 2008.  I received my BS from Western Carolina University and my M.Ed from Grand Canyon University.  After teaching at the elementary level for fifteen years, I became a school librarian.  I obtained my second Masters in Library and Information Science from USC Columbia.  I was a classroom teacher for 15 years before becoming a Media Specialist (aka. a Librarian). I just completed my 22nd year in education! What a milestone!!!  I love what I do!

I love reading a variety of genres.  Some of my favorite authors include Andrew Clements, James Patterson, Raina Telgemeier, and J.K Rowling, just to name a few.  I truly enjoy helping students find books that meet their interests, promoting safe use of technology, and promoting research and inquiry skills.  I also love working with my fellow teachers to aid them with their students, books, and technology needs.  I am a member of the South Carolina Association of School Librarians (SCASL), and currently serve on the Children's Book Award Committee.

According to the American Association of School Librarians, School librarians empower students to Think, Create, Share, and Grow in the school library as they learn to harness curiosity, model responsibility, inspire exploration, promote creativity, and deepen understanding. School libraries create equity and prepare all learners for college, career, and life.

Media Center Policies

The Media Center strives to be an essential part of the instructional program and the hub of the school. We areassisting students and staff in becoming effective 21st Century users of ideas and information while creatinglife-long learners and lovers of reading. The media center operates on a fixed schedule. Students come during their regular scheduled class time and are permitted to come throughout the day to exchange their books once they have finished reading and to utilize the media center at the convenience of the classroom teacher. Teachers and students are encouraged to check out materials as needed for personal or classroom use. Students are aware that they are allowed to take media center books home.

Listed below are the amounts of books students are allowed to check out each week.

  • 5K: 1 book

  • 1st-3rd Grades: 2 books

  • 4th-5th Grades: 3 books

Books are due weekly and may be returned before the due date if needed. If time beyond the due date is needed, books can be renewed. It is a student's responsibility to keep up with and take care of the book(s) they borrow from the media center. It is in good faith that we have loaned them the books in the hope that they will return them the same. There are no overdue fines when books are returned late. However, when a student returns a book that is damaged or has lost it, he or she will have to pay to replace it.

*If students already have overdue books from the 21/22 school term, they may take home a withdrawn book until book(s) or fine paid. JES wants all students to have an opportunity to enjoy reading!
