North Augusta, SC – Dr. Jennifer Moore’s kindergarten class at North Augusta Elementary took a virtual journey across the Atlantic today, exploring the vibrant culture and geography of Ghana. The immersive learning experience allowed students to engage in multiple hands-on activities that brought the West African country to life from the comfort of their classroom.
Dr. Moore creatively transformed her classroom into an airplane, complete with seating arrangements and decorations to simulate a real flight experience. The adventure began with a geography lesson, where students used maps to track their “flight” to Ghana. As they explored the country’s landscapes and landmarks, they developed a deeper understanding of world geography and global connections.
Following their arrival, the young explorers embarked on a virtual safari ride. The experience provided inspiration for a writing exercise in which students learned how to compose postcards describing their adventure. This activity not only encouraged creativity but also reinforced important literacy skills.
To further enrich their experience, the kindergarteners sampled traditional Ghanaian snacks. The tasting session sparked excitement as students tried new flavors and then graphed their favorites, integrating math skills into their cultural exploration.
Dr. Moore emphasized the importance of these virtual experiences in broadening students’ perspectives. “This kind of interactive learning makes the world more accessible to our young learners,” she said. “It encourages curiosity and a love for learning beyond the classroom.”
The virtual field trip to Ghana was a memorable experience, leaving the students excited to continue their journey of discovery in future lessons. With technology and creativity, Dr. Moore’s class proved that learning has no borders.
A special thank you to Dr. Jennifer Moore (Pilot), Mrs. Faw (Co-Pilot), Mrs. Ulmer (Flight Attendant), and Officer Moulton (TSA Officer) for making this experience come to life for our students.
