The Fun Stuff

My name is Lindsey Calhoun, but I go by Ms. Lindsey with the children. This is my 6th year teaching, but my first year as an art teacher. 😊 I am so glad to be teaching your children! Some fun facts- I am the oldest of eight sisters and I have a pug named Pig who I share funny stories about every chance I get. I recently married the love of my life who I met on the other side of the world. Coffee is the fourth love of my life- after my husband, dog, and teaching of course. My favorite works of art to create are portraits of people special to me that I love to give as gifts (risky, I know).

Education and Experience

When it comes to my educational background, well, I am a former Redcliffe Elementary student! I graduated from USC-Aiken back in 2019 with a Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. I then traveled to China with the Peace Corps and taught college students how to be English teachers! After being evacuated during COVID-19, I was displaced for a little while. During that time when everyone was quarantined, I took advantage of the spare time and started pursuing my passion for art education and became certified to teach art. When things started opening back up, I traveled to South Korea and taught at an English immersion kindergarten. One thing I learned during my time overseas is the value of art in connecting with students- even when you can't speak the same language or experience cultural differences. After a year of teaching in Korea, I moved to Charleston and began teaching at a public Montessori school where I had the opportunity to get my Master's degree in Montessori Education. After three years there, life brought me back home to Redcliffe! Thank goodness- that was a lot of packing and unpacking!

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching to me is about helping children find their own way. Independence and the ability to do things themselves is something children crave, so I try to give them the tools to do things on their own. Whether that's choosing which type of art they want to work on that day or figuring out the workspace that will be best for the project they are doing or even cleaning up after themselves when they are finished working. Art is all about the process. Sometimes you don't know what the end product will be until you start creating! You won't see everyone working on the same thing in our class. I will teach technical art skills, the elements of art, history, lessons on artists... but the actual art will all come from original ideas from your children, not me. That is the joy of creating that I wouldn't dare to rob anyone of experiencing, especially children who have so many ideas to put out into the world! In my class, every single person has something valuable to offer and everyone is an artist.

Questions

If you ever have questions, please reach out. I am happy to have a conversation about just about anything. I have a question for each of you if you feel obliged to answer via Thrillshare message or email- How did you feel about art class growing up? Did you feel like you were a good artist? Why or why not?
