More than three dozen community members spent Feb. 28 as “principal for a day” at schools across Aiken County, getting a first-hand look at how school leaders guide their teachers and deal with the joys and tragedies experienced by the district’s 23,000 students.

At Warrenville Elementary, Patti Monczewski, chief operating officer of Aiken Regional Medical Centers, followed principal Charlene Heard as she made her morning rounds, walking down every hallway, using her key to unlock each classroom door and check in on every teacher and class.

Monczewski said she and Heard have similar roles as leaders of their organizations, communicating with their teams “to understand if they have any barriers that we can help eliminate.”
