By Bill Bengtson/The Aiken Standard

Dezmond Chavous, a freshman at North Augusta High School, is the new North Augusta Idol, having won the annual talent show's top honor Tuesday evening.

Chavous, whose parents are Pete and Tiffany Chavous, got an enthusiastic reception via his dramatic presentation of "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," a song made famous by Donnie Hathaway.

"I started singing in church, at about the age of 5," Chavous later recalled, acknowledging Beulah Grove Baptist Church, in Augusta, as his home congregation. He said this was his third time of performing in North Augusta Idol.
