'Voice of the Mustangs’ Calls the Action for Midland Valley Football

Since the turn of the millennium, attendees of Midland Valley High School football games have heard the voice of Philip Rabon over the home stadium’s loudspeakers.

Rabon is the school’s public address announcer and is referred to as the “voice of the Mustangs” on Midland Valley’s website. He has been at the school since 1999, and started calling football games around his second year there.

He said he enjoys calling the games because it allows him to be involved and be “part of the action without having to get hit.”

“You get to be there for all the stuff,” Rabon said. “It’s more than passively watching the game. You’re getting to announce something when it happens, you get to be the one that screams ‘touchdown, Mustangs,’ you’re reading the ads.”

However, Rabon does more than just provide a voice for what’s happening on the playing field.

“There have been a lot of years where I’m announcing and keeping track of stats and I’m updating on Twitter,” Rabon said.

His main job, though, will always be sitting in the booth to call the action.

“You get to be a little cheerleader, you get to tell people what’s going on,” Rabon said. “You have kids in your classroom, and they do something great and you can say their name and the kids love hearing that.”
