The students of East Aiken School of the Arts celebrated the importance of reading during their annual reading day festivities.
“They’ve done a great job, and it’s a fun way to celebrate reading,” said Melanie Starks, East Aiken’s media specialist. “It’s a culmination of the fact that we’ve worked all year toward reading goals. It’s a celebration of all they’ve worked hard on this year.”
On June 5, students engaged in a day full of reading activities, including a book swap event that allowed them to take home several new-to-them books. As the day drew to a close, students participated in a book float parade, which required students to create their own floats based on the book their class read.
“I always love the creativity,” Starks said. “I love seeing what books the students loved and how they chose to artistically represent those books.”
The school also welcomed students from Aiken Scholars Academy who read aloud to others. These students previously learned how to present an interactive read-aloud under the instruction of ASA English teacher Anne Poplin.
“I enjoyed having our Aiken Scholars Academy students join us as guest readers,” Starks said. “They did a fabulous job demonstrating reading fluency and serving as reading role models for our students.”
