Students unloaded from cars and buses to enter Highland Springs Middle School, the newest middle school in North Augusta, for the first day of school.
“To me it just means that we can be up and running and functioning in a way that is supportive to students much quicker than we could have been if we had to implement any of our contingency plans,” Highland Springs principal Paige Day said. “We are looking forward to a smooth first day. Our teachers are ready, the building is ready and we are excited to be here and opening up.”
“Our parents and our students have been so supportive through this whole process, and there has been a lot of uncertainty in this process, but I have just been really overwhelmed by how supportive they have been the entire time,” Day said. “Ultimately I got a bunch of woo-hoos and ultimately I think everyone is happy that we can open the doors today.”
Highland Springs parent and faculty member Monte Clark is happy to be in the building for the first day of school.
“The school is great and it’s top notch. The students are going to love it and it’s definitely the nicest school I’ve ever been in,” Clark said. “I’m looking forward to it and these parents are too, that’s why they got here so early.”
“It was really a partnership between the contractors, our technology staff, our maintenance staff, the administration and the teachers in the school just getting ready and getting it done in time,” Aiken County superintendent King Laurence said.
