The Rotary Club of Aiken’s Rotary Readers program is having a positive impact at East Aiken School of the Arts, according to Principal Lisa Fallaw and Media Specialist Melanie Starks.
They provided data as proof during the organization’s meeting Monday at Newberry Hall.
Seven groups of East Aiken students were involved in Rotary Readers during the 2022-23 school year.
There were two groups each of third, fourth and fifth grade children, and one group of 4K students.
The youngsters in the 4K group “were at the highest risk for academic failure” among their peers, Fallaw said.
At the beginning of the school year, none of those children were meeting literacy expectations as measured by the GOLD assessment, she reported.
By the end of the year, “100 percent of those students were meeting expectations in literacy, which was fantastic,” Fallaw said.
