Lauriana Cabana, a junior at Ridge Spring-Monetta Middle/High School, has been named the South Carolina state champion at the 2023 Future Farmers of America Agricultural Career and Development Event.
For this event, students were required to craft a well-structured agricultural lesson plan, which they presented in front of a panel of judges as well as a real classroom. The competition was based on the components of the lesson plan, the presenter’s time management skills and ability to engage with students. Competitors were also required to take an agriculture exam and complete an interview.
Cabana competed against nine other qualifying South Carolina participants.
“She’s an amazing young woman,” said RSM Middle/High principal Matthew Shepler. “She’s what we want from our students.”
Cabana’s agricultural interest comes from growing up around animals, and agriculture classes at RSM helped her to make more sense of the natural world.
