Aiken Elementary School held its second Turkey Trot, an incentive event meant to encourage students to donate canned goods for Golden Harvest Food Bank.
According to principal Kristie Brooks, this has been a fun way “to promote giving back and understanding that we’re very, very blessed.”
Tuesday’s event, like last year’s, was planned to be full of outdoor activities — until the rain came. However, Aiken Elementary staff didn’t let it stop them from making the Turkey Trot a wonderful day of indoor fun.
Brooks spoke about physical education teacher Shannon Erwin’s dedication to making the Turkey Trot fun despite the weather: “She jumped in and made sure that we still had activities and fun stuff since we couldn’t be outside this year.”
Children from all grade levels had a chance to play games in the gym. One of these was Turkey Takedown, a dodgeball-inspired game where students had to defend paper turkeys from being knocked down. Younger grades participated in a race around the gym, stopping to stick paper feathers to a board as they ran each lap.
