Aiken Elementary School’s third graders eagerly searched for the perfect book to take home Thursday morning from the annual book fair.
This year, nonprofit organization Public Education Partners provided each of these students with a book voucher with a $12 value to ensure that everyone had a chance to take home a book.
This literacy initiative, known as My Own Book, is a new program that is planned to be implemented in all Aiken County’s public elementary schools. So far, third grade students of Aiken Elementary and Hammond Hill Elementary have benefited from the program. Other area elementary schools can look forward to the expansion of My Own Book in 2024.
“The idea is that we give each third grader in Aiken County the opportunity to choose their own book,” PEP Board Chair Nancy Marks said. “These kids are so excited.”
