The threat of a powerful storm surge, high winds and a deluge of rainfall along the South Carolina coast associated with Hurricane Matthew has forced the postponement of all Aiken County Public School District high school football games previously scheduled for Friday, October 7.
Aiken County Public Schools were closed for the remainder of the week Tuesday afternoon following the declaration of a State of Emergency for portions of the Midlands and the entire Lowcountry by Governor Nikki Haley.
To accommodate the tremendous number of games needing to be rescheduled across South Carolina, the High School League announced Wednesday that the high school football season would be extended by one week to allow this week’s games (many are region contests) to be played.
“The immediate concern is the safety of our coaches, student athletes and their families. Our primary sense of urgency is for them to be able to focus on their personal well-being and decision making for the next few days while bracing for the predicted weather conditions,” stated Jerome Singleton, SCHSL Commissioner, in a news release.
The SCHSL high school football playoffs for all classifications will begin November 11, with State Championship games now scheduled for December 9 and 10.
Aiken County Public School District football games rescheduled for Friday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. include:
- Midland Valley at Aiken
- North Augusta at Airport
- North at Wagener-Salley
- Blackville-Hilda at Ridge Spring-Monetta
- Silver Bluff at Allendale-Fairfax
