District Hosts Progress of the Penny Community Sales Tax Update

Aiken County Public School District and the One Cent Oversight Committee provided an update for the community on the progress of the Education Capital Improvements Sales & Use Tax that is helping to rebuild school facilities during a live virtual meeting held Thursday evening.

The Community Update marked the second-annual community meeting to share with stakeholders the progress of the penny and the status of school construction projects.

The District Office served as the live broadcast location for the event.

Virtual meetings hosted by area advisory council members were held throughout the county, increasing convenience for community members in all areas of our District. The virtual sites included Midland Valley High School, North Augusta High School, Ridge Spring-Monetta High School, Silver Bluff High School and Wagener-Salley High School.

“During this year’s broadcast we provided our stakeholders with a comprehensive presentation and never-before-seen photographs of the construction progress taken just before the event,” Superintendent Dr. Sean Alford said. “We also provided our community with updated financial information on collections and access to a live question-and-answer session with our team of architects, district staff and construction.”

ABOUT THE TAX:

In November 2014, Aiken County citizens voted in support of the Education Capital Improvements Sales and Use Tax to address facility construction of Aiken County’s aging schools.

This additional 1% sales tax took effect on March 1, 2015, and is helping to fund rebuilding of North Augusta and Aiken high schools, Leavelle-McCampbell Middle School, Ridge Spring-Monetta’s K-12 Campus and, as funds are available, upgrades to the Career & Technology Center.

The District utilized conservative sales tax projections provided by the South Carolina Revenue & Fiscal Affairs Office for planning purposes and as required by the enabling legislation.  The Revenue & Fiscal Affairs Office projected $188,639,040 over the life of the ten year, 120-month collection period.
