The Southern City Film Festival is offering an epic experience for Aiken County's students over spring break by welcoming students in sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grades to engage in FREE film workshops, April 3-6.
Two workshops are being held and are limited to 20 students per two-day session. The first session will be Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4; the second Wednesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 6. Both will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Aiken Center for the Arts' Brown Pavilion, 122 Laurens Street in downtown Aiken.
The curriculum will introduce and expose students to the art of storytelling, writing, and cinematography, as well as the initial aspects of filmmaking. Visiting instructor and Aiken native Austin Smoak, a graduate of East Aiken, Kennedy Middle and South Aiken High School will teach students the craft of film making. Austin furthered her education at Florida State University with a degree in film studies and continued on to the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles where she is currently teaching and working in the California film industry. Austin’s extensive resume includes teaching and assisting with workshops in Los Angeles, Boston, Miami, Hawaii, and Lagos, Nigeria.
Registration will be held at Aiken Center for the Arts' front desk on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 10:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Please have the following information available: student’s name, address and birth date. Each adult may register up to two students; sibling groups may be registered together by one adult.
These film workshops will provide a foundation for a continuation of film study and diverse opportunities in Aiken supported by the University of South Carolina Aiken, the Aiken Center for the Arts and the City of Aiken.
The workshops will be an expansion of the documentary work and a continuation of the film study sessions already underway through Southern City Film Festival and in collaboration with Aiken County Public Schools and the generosity of Title Sponsor USC Aiken and Education Sponsor SRNS.
