GSK Announces Support of NMSI at STEM Mentoring Exchange

GlaxoSmithKline joins major energy partners and donors AECOM & SRNS in support of the National Math + Science Initiative

AIKEN, S.C. (May 19, 2017) –GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) joins major private donors AECOM and Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) in support of Aiken County’s implementation of the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) College Readiness Program (CRP) at South Aiken and North Augusta high schools.

The announcement from GSK was made this morning at the NMSI STEM Mentoring Exchange held at S. Aiken high school, an event pairing local scientists and engineers with Advanced Placement (AP) STEM students.

This morning’s event, the largest to date for the District, featured 16 scientists and engineers from major donors AECOM and SRNS, as well as a several from GSK and Savannah River Remediation (SRR), one from MOX, and the Human Resources Manager from BAE.  

The mentoring session, facilitated by NMSI representatives, aimed to connect students’ classroom studies with exciting STEM careers, and to introduce students to industry professionals leading science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the local area.

GSK’s commitment, combined with extensive support from major donors AECOM,  SRNS, and the US Department of Defense are financing NMSI’s three-year implementation process. NMSI’s College Readiness Program, implemented in more than 1,000 partner schools across 34 states, dramatically improves measurable student achievement in rigorous coursework achieving a 152% average three-year increase in successful AP math and science exams (scores 3+ on a 5-point scale).

Friday’s breakfast workshop at South Aiken is an extension AECOM, SRNS and GSK’s contributions to Aiken County’s schools.
