Experienced ACPSD Educator and Administrator John Metts Named Principal of Jefferson Elementary School for 2022-23

Jefferson Elementary School students and staff will see a new face leading next year, but John Metts, who has been named the school’s principal for the upcoming school year, is no stranger to Aiken County Public Schools.

Metts, who is currently the principal of Millbrook Elementary School in Aiken, is a product of Aiken County Public Schools who attended Redcliffe Elementary, Jackson Middle School, and graduated from Silver Bluff High School.

“I’m excited to collaborate with the students, staff, and the community of Jefferson Elementary,” Metts said. “I look forward to embracing the great traditions here, and working with the staff to set goals to ensure we’re providing the best opportunities for our students while focusing on high expectations for learning.”

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of South Carolina Aiken and a Master’s degree in elementary education from Augusta State University. Metts began his career in education in 2004 as an elementary school teacher and continued teaching third and fifth grade for nine years. In 2013, Metts was appointed assistant principal of Millbrook Elementary School, and in 2015, he was named the school’s principal.

“Serving the students of Aiken County has always brought me great joy,” Metts said. “I know the value of a good education, and I will continue to strive for excellent learning opportunities for all students.”

Metts said he is looking forward to meeting Jefferson Elementary students, families, staff, and community members and will continue building positive relationships with all stakeholders.

Metts has been nominated twice as Aiken County Public Schools Principal of the Year and is a recipient of the Time to Care About Education award.

Metts’ duties will begin in July. The community is invited to meet Metts on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, in a drop-in style event held in the school’s Media Center from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
