Experienced South Carolina Education Administrator Dr. Amy Edwards Named Chief Instructional Officer

Dr. Amy Edwards joins Aiken County Public School District with over 25 years of experience serving students in South Carolina. She has held various leadership positions at the school, district, and state levels and brings with her extensive knowledge and experience in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and leadership development.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the leadership team for Aiken County Public Schools,” shared Dr. Edwards.  Aiken County Board of Education members unanimously approved Dr. Edwards’ appointment as the District’s new Chief Instructional Officer during the school board’s regularly scheduled meeting on August 23, 2022. Jeanie Glover, the District’s current leader of the Instructional Services Division, is retiring at the end of the month.

Most recently, Dr. Edwards has served as a private educational consultant for school districts across South Carolina. She has previously served Aiken County Public Schools as a mentor and coach for principals within the District and as Interim Principal for Aiken Scholars Academy.  Under her leadership, multiple school districts across the state have experienced tremendous leadership development and transformation. Superintendent King Laurence commented, “I have known and worked with Dr. Edwards in various capacities for more than 10 years. We are fortunate to have her join us in Aiken County.”

Dr. Edwards shared, “My professional focus has been, and will continue to be, creating situations that are advantageous to all stakeholders. Striving for excellence is what comes naturally to me, and I look forward to working in a system that shares my professional aspirations.”

Dr. Edwards’ academic background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from The College of Charleston along with a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and an Educational Specialist degree in Supervision and Leadership from The Citadel. She also holds a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from South Carolina State University. 

She began her career in education in Andrews, South Carolina, where she taught elementary and middle school before becoming a school principal. From there, she went on to serve Berkeley County School District for several years as a teacher, Title I Curriculum Facilitator, and assistant principal. In 2006, Dr. Edwards relocated to Spartanburg where she served Spartanburg District Six in multiple leadership roles, coaching teachers at all levels and coordinating K-12 testing while researching scientifically based academic programs for initiation.  

From 2012 to 2016, she served as Chief Academic Officer for Curriculum and Instruction and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for Dorchester and Orangeburg County School Districts, respectively. Dr. Edwards was appointed Transformation Leadership Coach for the South Carolina Department of Education in 2016 before becoming an independent educational consultant.

Dr. Edwards will begin her role as Chief Instructional Officer with Aiken County Public Schools in late-August.
