Students Honor Life & Legacy of Dr. King

Students throughout Aiken County have honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by participating in the 2024 MLK Community Celebration Poster and Essay Contest.

Kindergarten-5th grade creative arts poster contest submissions required students to share what Martin Luther King, Jr. Day means to them. 

Middle and high school essays focused on the meaning of the Dr. King quote, “For it isn’t by size that you win or fail. Be the best of whatever you are.”

Congratulations to the following student winners who will be recognized at the 2024 MLK Community Celebration on January 21st at 3:00pm at the USC Aiken Convocation Center.

For the High School Essay Contest, Tavion Wooley from Aiken Scholars Academy is the first place winner, and Mya Holston, a student at South Aiken, won second. 

First, second and third, place winners in the middle school essay contest are all Paul Knox MIddle School students. Aidynn Dzul won first, Aubrey Williams, second, and Layla Cole, third. 

Busbee Elementary students claimed first and second place in the 3rd-5th grade poster contest, with Leigaci Tafe winning first and Jaxon McCleod winnign second. Aiken Elementary School student Chloe Bryant won third. 

Busbee Elementary was back with another first place win in the Kindergarten - 2nd grade poster contest with Adrianna Tanner's submission. Oakwood Windsor students Fabrizio Padilla and Diana Buenrostro will also be recognized as second and third place winners. 

All are invited to attend Aiken Technical College and the University of South Carolina Aiken's annual community-wide celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, January 21st, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the University of South Carolina Aiken Convocation Center. The celebration is a time to reflect on the past and focus on the future of humanity. Dr. King’s legacy has taught us to commit ourselves to service by serving each other and those in our communities.
