CELEBRATING AIKEN COUNTY SCHOOL COUNSELING STATE AWARD WINNERS; NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK FEBRUARY 5-9, 2024

Schools across the country will celebrate National School Counseling Week February 5-9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.

National School Counseling Week will be extra special in Aiken County Public School District this year. The Palmetto State School Counselor Association recently honored two of our own school counselors and one assistant principal with state awards. Marlee Calloway, a school counselor at North Augusta Middle School, was named the Middle School Counselor of the Year, and Anya Stewart, a school counselor at North Augusta High School, was named the High School Counselor of the Year. Additionally, Kristin Risher, an assistant principal at North Augusta High School was named the School Counselor Advocate of the Year.

“It was an exciting moment to witness our Aiken County counselors receive such an impressive honor at the state level,” commented Sharon Worley, Coordinator of Counseling and Career Services for Aiken County Public Schools. “I am so proud of our counseling team and thankful for administrators like Ms. Risher who support the work we do for students and families.”

The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who help students examine their abilities, strengths, interests, and talents; for working in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; for focusing on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career, and social development; and working with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential.

School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

“Our school counselors in Aiken County are top notch. They work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career options, and providing emotional support to our students each day,” continued Worley.

More than 100,000 school counselors nationwide will be participating in weekly festivities during National School Counseling Week. Many schools will be hosting special events and activities to call attention to the countless benefits of a comprehensive school counseling program.
