To the New Ellenton Middle STEAM Magnet School community:

Greetings! As your new principal, I am thrilled to welcome each of you to what promises to be an exciting and rewarding school year. I am deeply honored to join this dedicated team of educators and collaborative community. Together, I believe we have the opportunity to inspire our students, foster a positive and inclusive school culture, and build upon our foundation of EXCELLENCE.

I am born and raised in Augusta, Georgia and I'm proud graduate of the historic Lucy C. Laney High School! After high school, I attended Morris Brown College (Atlanta, GA) on band and academic scholarships and majored in Communications. From there, I attended Augusta State University for my graduate degrees and I am currently pursuing my Doctorate degree in K-12 School Improvement.

This year will be my 16th in education and before school administration, I taught 7th grade math, Algebra I & II, Geometry, and Pre Calculus. Through all the different subjects, grade levels, and schools, however, I have always maintained a love for my students. Each year, I am intentional about building these positive relationships because I firmly believe in the age-old saying: students don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.

My mission is rooted and grounded in service, collaboration, instructional leadership, and providing a nurturing school environment, one conducive to student growth. I am proud to serve as your principal for these reasons. I've come to learn that these foundational tenets are part of what has propelled our school to four consecutive EXCELLENT ratings and together we will grow in excellence.

Today, I am a husband, a  father, and very active in my church as a licensed minister and musician. My wife of 19 years and I are raising four children and this year we will have three in college!

Thank you to everyone who has reached out and provided a warm welcome. There is much to learn, much to know, and growth to experience; I would have it no other way. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, or concerns you may have. My door is always open, and I am here to support you in any way I can.

Thank you!

Jonyetta Thomas

It is with great honor and enthusiasm that I join the NEMS family. I am incredibly grateful and excited to accept this new role! I know I am joining a strong school culture synonymous with excellence, dedication, and collaboration. My goal is to enhance this culture and provide all stakeholders with an uplifting educational experience.

I am thrilled to welcome you to New Ellenton Middle STEAM Magnet School. NEMS is a great place to learn and grow, and I am delighted that you are a part of our amazing learning community. I welcome your positive energy and dedication to excellence.

Our skilled and devoted staff have planned and prepared an incredible and productive school year. All things have been set in motion to surround each student in a joyous and caring community with the common goals of nurturing each other and promoting high-level learning for all. This will also require a total commitment to excellence from parents and community stakeholders. I ask you to become an active participant in our educational community. We offer several opportunities for stakeholders to be involved in the education process. Please consider joining the School Improvement Council and P.T.O. We are always looking for mentors and volunteers to help our students.

Please take a moment to read the student agenda and handbook. Be aware of the procedures, rules, and policies that will have an impact on our educational environment. Knowing this information will give you the answers to most of the questions that may arise throughout the school year. It was developed as a guide and a referencing tool to help us provide a safe learning environment for all our students.

All students are expected to do their very best. Our goal is to foster independent thinkers and promote a culture of safety and respect. We pride ourselves on being a community of learners where students and staff look for opportunities to learn from each other daily. We are committed to high academic expectations, mutual respect, and social responsibility. Moreover, the staff at NEMS has high expectations for all of our students and even higher expectations of ourselves. We will continue to dedicate our focus to improving student learning for all.

I look forward to partnering with you to make this school year as meaningful and joyful as possible. Let us work together to prepare our students for a bright and successful future.

On behalf of the NEMS staff, I wish you all an excellent school year!
